apperance;; Katara's eyes are blue, reflecting the rich blue colour of the ocean and the element she learned to master. She always wears blue, reflecting the Water Tribe she is so proud to have come from. When she was younger, she tended to wear a traditional water tribe dress though now she is older she tends to wear a loose water tribe shirt with a belt and a longer skirt over baggy navy trousers along with fur boots, marking her growth into a new stage in her life. Her new outfit is a deeper blue that her old dress she wore as a child and teenager. Her most prized possession resides around her neck; her mother's engagement necklace she was given before her mother passed away and her favourite reminder of her mother she lost too soon. Now that Katara is older, she tends to leave her hair out more often; and when she does her hair tends to curl into gentle waves when it dries. Though she has grown older, she has not lost her hair loops which she still wears proudly.
personality;; Katara has the ability, heart and compassion to be the kindest and gentlest person, however she happens to be cursed with a short temper which leads her to become frustrated with people. Even though she can have a short fuse, Katara is always kind and would never turn her back on people who needed her help or look away when she thought there was something she could do to help someone else. The event that had the biggest impact on Katara in her life was when she lost her mother as a small child. As a child, the Fire Nation raided Katara's village, and in the search for the last water bender in the Southern Water Tribe, the Fire Nation soldiers killed her mother. It wasn't until years later when she found the man who killed her mother she would learn of what she did to save her. Even though she knew she would never be able to forgive the man who took her mother from her, she was unable to bring herself to kill him and become as bad as he was.
Another thing Katara has a hard time doing is forgiving. After the loss of her mother and the effects of the war, Katara had trouble forgiving people when they hurt her, and it became something she struggled with for her whole life. Because of the loss of her mother, Katara had to learn how to look after herself when she was young. She grew up not only trying to look after herself, but trying to be there for her brother as well. Due to her mother's passing and her father fighting in the war, her grandmother Kanna and would do anything to stay by her brother's side as she refuses to loose anyone else in her family to the war. The only thing that could bring her to part from her grandmother's side was when she found Aang and knew she and Sokka needed to go with him to help bring balance back to the world.
family;;
Mother - Kya (deceased)
Father - Cheif Hakoda
Grandmother - Kanna
Brother - Sokka
Sister-in-Law - Suki
history;; Katara was born the last Water Bender of the Southern Water Tribe to Kya and Cheif Hakoda. At the time of her birth, Katara's tribe had been experiencing 45 of constant Fire Nation invasions. Her tribe had diminished in size and due to Fire Nation having already captured all of their Water Benders and their remoteness, they were left mostly alone which was a good thing due to their benders being gone they did not have any defence to protect themselves if they were to be attacked. The exception to this formed pattern occurred when the Fire Nation heard there was one last Water Bender in the Southern Water Tribe. To prevent this from becoming a problem, the Fire Nation attacked, and questioned Katara's mother, Kya, as to the identity of the last Water Bender in the Souther Water Tribe. Kya lied to protect her daughter, presenting herself as the last Water Bender and exchanged her life in order to protect her daughters and her daughter's identity as the last Water Bender of the Southern Water Tribe.
When growing up, Katara and her brother Sokka were raised by their grandmother Kanna after their mother's passing, their father having left to lead the warriors from the tribe in the war. Because of this, Katara tried to compensate for her brother's sake and did everything she could to shield him from the reality of their mother being gone and did everything she could to be there for him. Because of this, she fell into a mothering roll, looking out for her brother no matter how rash he acted and fulfilled many of the domestic activities that were normally preformed by the mothers of the Southern Water Tribe. After her father left, even though her grandmother loved and cared for Sokka and Katara very much, Katara couldn't help but feel alone due to her parent's absence in her life.
When Katara met Aang and discovered that he was the long lost Avatar, she knew she needed to do what she could to help the Avatar bring balance back to the world. She traveled around the world and made friendships she knew would last for the rest of her life, however every time their small group grew, she had trouble embracing the new member straight away. When Toph first joined the group, Katara found her irritating and selfish, though before long they had a friendship that could not be broken. The same happened with Zuko when he first joined their group, though it took more for him to earn her trust due to their constant history of trying to out run him as he tried to kill them. Her trusting him was also hindered by the time she began to trust him before he betrayed her and turned on Aang, very almost causing her best friend to loose his life.
After the end of the 100 Year War, Katara joined Aang and the Harmony Restoration Movement in an attempt to remove the Fire Nation from the Earth Kingdom Colonies, though it wasn't long into the movement that it became obvious that there were families that had made lives in the Earth Kingdom and that removing the colonies was not the right thing to do for the families that had come to be part of both the Fire Nation and the Earth Kingdom. It was from this discovery that Republic City began and Katara became one of the first of the Water Tribes to move to the new city that was to be the centre of all the kingdoms.
Aang, our actions always have an effect,
sometimes positive, sometimes negative... and sometimes not for many lifetimes.
